Davey Apples were developed from a McIntosh apple seedling discovered in 1928 by a S. Lothrop Davenport. He was the director of the Worcestershire County Horticultural Society in Massachusetts.
The apples received a first-class award from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in 1945, and were introduced commercially in 1950.
