Inside, they have pale orange flesh, and a small seed cavity. The flesh is juicy and sweet, and has a musky flavour.
The melons range from 2 to 3 pounds (900 to 1400g.)
The plant is very productive. Average vine size is 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 metres) in diameter. Each vine will set about 10 melons, requiring about 85 days from seed. When the melons are ready, they will slip off the vine. Some growers observe that the melons tend to all ripen all at once.
History Notes
Emerald Gem Melons were introduced by Burpee’s Seed Company in 1886. Now considered an heirloom variety.
