Alapaha blueberries were developed jointly by the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Small Fruit Research Station in Poplarville, Mississippi and the University of Georgia Alapaha Research Station. Released 2001.

Alapaha blueberries were named after the Alapaha River in the southern part of the American state of Georgia.
