Chocolate syrup is a thick, sweetened sauce flavoured with chocolate. Mint-flavoured varieties are also available.
It can be used to make chocolate milk, as a topping for ice cream, or in baking.
Most commercial bottled or canned chocolate syrups are made with corn syrup. More expensive kinds are not.
Not all brands of chocolate syrup will actually contain even cocoa or chocolate. In Canada, Hershey’s and President’s Choice list cocoa as an ingredient, though the President’s Choice also contains corn syrup.
History Notes
Recipes for making Chocolate Syrup appeared in “Cocoa and Chocolate” (Walter Baker Co., 1886) for Chocolate Syrup. Hershey’s began selling theirs in 1929.
