It’s found off Australia and New Zealand, where it’s also sometimes just referred to as Yellowtail Jack.
The Japanese call this fish “hiramasa.” What is labelled “hiramasa” on sushi menus in America, though, will often actually be a fish called “Cobia” or “Lemon Fish.” Farmed Yellowtail Jack (the Californian species) is also being called “hiramasa” in Australia.
