It is a tea celebration designed to help revive sales of tea in the UK.
As of 2016, the top per-person tea consuming counties are (1) Turkey, (2) Ireland, and (3) United Kingdom. [1] Statista. January 2016. National Tea Day campaign
National Tea Day is a tea industry sponsored holiday:
“We are on a mission… to get Britain passionate about tea again. By working with retailers, brands, hotels and most importantly consumers we are enabling people to explore a greater variety of better quality teas.” [2]National Tea Day 2019 Brand Guidelines. Version 2, February 2019. Page 5.
There’s a professional brand kit put out telling participants which fonts even to use in any material they produce. Here the kit identifies the target audience for the National Tea Day campaign:
A ‘Fes-Tea-Val’ conference / exhibition is held in a physical location where merchants display latest gadgets and trends related to tea. Past locations have included Chiswick House and at Tobacco Dock in London
The day is focussed on tea consumption and sales, and not on production, as International Tea Day is, though at least one smaller company has tried to mention sustainability and traceability in their material for National Tea Day. The campaign also relies on flag-waving to promote tea, placing the British Union Jack flag on a teapot in one of the logos used to in order to help tie the product in with cultural identity, which is one of the campaign’s goals:
“Britishness — Respectful of the history and traditions of tea and the role it plays in British culture whilst embracing innovation, modern consumer sentiment & behaviours and creativity” [4]National Tea Day 2019 Brand Guidelines. Version 2, February 2019. Page 7.
The campaign leaders say they choose the word “brew a cup of tea” rather than “make a cup of tea” as “brew” is a British word and reinforces the Britishness of the product.
