Killarney Red Rocambole Garlic bulbs are about 2 1/2 inches (6 cm) wide and uniformly-sized. They have thin purplish-brown skin which flakes off easily, so the garlic doesn’t store for a long time.

Inside, there will be 8 to 10 large, uniformly-sized cloves in a single layer with easy-to-peel pink skin. Frequently, there will be double cloves.

The plant thrives where winters are cold.

The garlic belongs to the Rocambole sub-group of hardneck garlics.

History Notes

Killarney Red Rocambole Garlic is possibily a mutation of German Red or Spanish Roja. It was developed in Idaho, USA.

‘Jane Grigson is the nearest thing that we have on this side of the great green bouillabaisse to M.F.K. Fisher, with learning and wit that are rarely devoted to such a banausic subject as stuffing food down one’s cake hole.’ — Philip Howard (British etiquette columnist).
