The 25th of September is the birthday of Maria Parloa.
She was one of the first to advocate for home economics to be taught in schools, and was an eager advocate of women buying every new labour-saving kitchen tool coming on the market that they could.
Her early life is a mystery, and there has been speculation that she was in fact an Irish immigrant covering her origin owing to vehement anti-Irish sentiment at the time. [1]Wild, Patrick Tierney. She taught at the famous Boston Cooking School right from its earliest days, and was part-owner of the Ladies Home Journal magazine. She published many cookbooks that were groundbreaking for their time, and authored several publications for the USDA.
Some people argue that it was she who came up with the first tomato soup recipe.
