Soup Day (Germany)

19 November

The 19th of November is Soup Day in Germany.

In the Northern Hemisphere, this comes as the fall season is well underway. Soup is one of the greatest gifts that this time of year brings, being a dish that is cheering both physically and spiritually on cold, dark, damp days such as these.

For Soup Day, try a good hearty soup, such as potato, cabbage or lentil. And it doesn’t matter if you are in Germany or not: everyone is invited to make and enjoy soup today, wherever you are!

In Germany, Saturdays in particular are a popular day of the week to have soup for lunch. — Driesner, Von Heidi. Das perfekte Nahrungsmittel.  Cologne, Germany: NTV. 7 November 2015. Accessed October 2021 at https://www.n-tv.de/leute/essen/Samstag-ist-Suppentag-article16258731.html

Activities for today

  • Make a homemade soup (and if you’ll be working on this day, remember: soup is one of the easiest foods to make ahead);
  • if time is short, start from a tin or a mix and gussy it up with a few additions;
  • have some friends over to share some soup;
  • if you work in a canteen, café or restaurant, make sure soup is on the menu today;
  • organize a fundraising soup luncheon;
  • join friends or work colleagues at a restaurant for some soup for lunch.

History

The GEFRO company in Germany, which makes soups, sauces and seasonings, started this day in 2013:

“On the day of soup on November 19th, 2013 we started an action for a good cause. At the Memmingen weekly market we offered soups and products for sale, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Memminger Tafel [a local food bank].” — Successful campaign in Memmingen. GEFRO.
