Swivel Peelers

Swivel peeler

Swivel peelers are distinguished from other peelers by the way in which their blade functions.  During use, the blade pivots, adjusting the angle automatically as needed — in theory.

Some people say swivel peelers are their favourite type of peeler because they give them maximum control over the angles.

Using a swivel peeler

Wash produce first before peeling to reduce surface bacterial load that might be pressed into the flesh of the produce.

To use a swivel peeler, you move the peeler back and forth in a straight motion on the produce. There is no need to swivel your wrist much.

They can be good for work with small, fine produce: “Several reviews suggest that ….. swivel peelers handle thinner carrots and asparagus best.” [1]Clisset, Christine Cyr et al. The Best Vegetable Peeler. New York Times. 7 December 2018. Accessed August 2018 at https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-vegetable-peeler/

The Jonas Peeler

One famous brand of swivel peeler is the Jonas™ peeler.

It is the all-metal peeler, with an open handle. The blade is stainless steel. It is 16.5 cm (6.5 inches) long.

It can be used by either left-handed or right-handed people.

It become the default peeler in American and Canadian kitchens in the 1950s and 1960s.

The standard handle is still all metal. Some people complain that it can hurt your hand after prolonged usage. Plastic open handle designs are now also available.

The Jonas first debuted on the market in 1953 in Sweden, where it was created, and then exported around the world. It is still made in Sweden by the Linden company (last checked: 2020). [2]”The original Jonas™ peeler was introduced in 1953. The swivel 18/10 stainless blade will stay sharp for years. It can be used by lefties or righties. Rust resistant. SS. Made in SE.” Linden Sweden Inc. Accessed August 2020 at https://www.lindensweden.com/original-jonas-peeler
