It is an older variety that is losing the popularity contest to newer varieties for several reasons. Though it will store happily for up to five months in commercial storage, it bruises quite easily. To minimize bruising in shipping, farmers have to get it off the trees as soon as the colour starts turning a yellowish-brown, which means the flavour won’t be quite fully developed.
Though the fruit is quite fragrant, the flesh is not as juicy as the newer varieties have been bred to be. The texture of the fruit from the same tree can vary from year to year, from smooth to a bit gritty, from a bit of a bitter taste to somewhat of a rum flavour.
The trees are pollinated by other Asian pear trees such as Hosui or Shinko.
