The 22nd of February is Margarita Day.
Celebrate the popular 20th-century cocktail made from tequila, lime juice and an orange liqueur (such as Triple Sec), and served in a salt-rimmed glass.
Fans just call them “margs”.
Margaritas have been around since at least the 1930s or 1940s and have experienced enduring popularity since. They are still one of the most popular summer and resort cocktails around.
If you are in Australia, there’s still enough summer left to enjoy them outdoors in the warmth of the sun. If you are in the northern hemisphere, you can enjoy a margarita indoors to help fend off the winter doldrums.
Some people say the holiday doesn’t start until after 5 p.m. Others respond by saying, “Fine, well it must be 5 p.m. somewhere in the world right now…”
Some bars and restaurants will offer deals and special promotions, such as lower prices, jumbo-sized glasses, bottomless margaritas, keep the glass, or special variations of margaritas. Tequila companies often get in on the promotions.
Here’s some ideas for today:
- make a margarita yourself from scratch at home or make from a mix if you are pressed from time;
- do a mixology course on how to make them from a bartender, either in person or online;
- get some friends from work together at your local watering hole for a margarita celebration;
- try a variation on it, such as a carrot margarita, a pineapple and cilantro margarita, or a mushroom margarita;
- cook some Mexican food for dinner;
- play some Jimmy Buffet music;
- go shopping online or in person to look at machines dedicated to making margaritas;
- book yourself a resort holiday somewhere warm.
Just remember, even though margaritas can taste like light refreshing juice, they’re not — they can pack a real alcoholic punch! So plan for a non-driving way to get home if you are out!

History
CooksInfo has found nothing in print media archives about a National Margarita Day on the 22nd of February until February 2008, at which point several hits on it start showing up.
The first is in the New York Daily News:
“Viva Tequila: There is almost nothing more important than celebrating liquor-sponsored holidays that don’t really exist. Feb. 22 is, improbably, National Margarita Day…” (This week’s news & to-do’s. New York City, New York: Daily News. Monday, 18 February 2008. Page 29, col. 3.)
Another is a full feature piece in the Arizona Republic:
In 1997, Jimmy Buffett released a now-song about margaritas called “Margaritaville”.
