Meletti is an amber-coloured bitters used as a digestif.
Its ingredients include caramel, saffron, and possibly white pepper. The flavour of the ingredients is extracted with alcohol flowed repeatedly through it. Some water and sugar is then added.
Though it has a syrup-like consistency, it has a dry taste, not a sweet one.
Meletti Bitters has a less aggressive bitter than many other Italian ones and is made in the Marche region on Italy’s east coast.
In addition to Meletti Bitters, the company Meletti also makes (as of 2007) a Mistrà and a Rosoglio.
History Notes
The Meletti Company was started in 1870 by a Silvio Meletti. Its present-day distillery was built in 1904. Their first product was an anise-flavoured liqueur.
