Olympic Pears

These pears are “Olympic” alright. With some of them weighing in at 16 oz, not only are they large, but they have perhaps the greatest staying power of all pears. Ripening in October, making them one of the last Asian pears of the season, they are still happily in commercial storage in March.

These round pears have orangey-brown skin with brown russeting. Inside, the flesh is white, with a bit of an earthy flavour that is very sweet: the fruit is 17% sugar.

Olympic are a new variety from Korea. The trees can be pollinated by Hosui, Shinseiki, even Bartlett pear trees, and hold promise for Western farmers not only because of their appeal on shop stands, but because they also resist fruit tree fireblight very well.
