Pole Beans is a generic term used to group bean plants based on how they grow. Bean plants in this group tend to grow upwards. They will generally grow to about 8 feet (2 ½ metres) tall.Consequently, Pole Beans need something to grow upwards or outwards on (such as tall poles, fences, trellises or a latticework of string.) Because they grow upwards, they don’t take up as much garden square footage as bush beans do.
As well, some beans on bush beans can grow trailing in the dirt, whereas pole beans don’t, so they are cleaner.
Pole Beans are also easier to pick because they are higher up.
Pole Beans generally mature later than bush beans, have later pods, and generally have higher yields. Pole Beans will keep producing for a longer period overall.
