Viking Apples

Viking are large to very large-sized apples.

They have glossy, smooth, green skin more than half covered with a dark red, almost purple flush.

Inside, they have finely-textured, semi-firm, off-white flesh with a somewhat watery core. The flesh is aromatic, but has a tart taste.

If the weather turns hot, ripened apples need to be picked on an almost daily basis.

Cooking Tips

The flavour survives cooking very well.

Storage Hints

Only stores about 1 month.

History Notes

Viking Apples were developed by the PRI (Purdue-Rutgers-Illinois) cooperative apple breeding program from experimental apples whose ancestry included Jonathan, Delicious, Williams Early Red, Early McIntosh and Starr apples. Introduced in Wisconsin in 1969.
