Whangaparaoa Crown Squash

Whangaparaoa Crown Squash are sometimes referred to as a pumpkin because they are round but flattened.

They have thin, slate-blue rind, and will weigh 2 ¼ to 6 ½ pounds (1 to 3 kg.)

Inside, they have dry, firm orange flesh with a sweet taste. Large seed cavity.

Storage Hints

Stores well, from 4 to 9 months.

History Notes

Whangaparaoa Crown Squash was developed in New Zealand. It was very widely grown there until the 1980s, when buttercup squash became more popular with growers.

Language Notes

Named after the Whangaparoa Peninsula in New Zealand.
