Zebra Beans

Zebra Beans grow on a bush with runners, though some varieties act more like pole beans. The plant flowers with purple blossoms.

The flattened pods are a dull green, mottled with purple, and the beans are black mottled with white.

Zebra Beans are best as a shelling bean or a bean for drying.

They are creamy when cooked.

Zebra Beans are popular in Spain.

In Australia, there are many different varieties of Zebra Beans including Count Zeppelin, Greek, Mollie’s, Mrs O’Brien’s and Scotia. Varieties differ based mainly in what types of growing conditions they prefer.

History Notes

Zebra Beans were brought to Australia by German settlers.
