The 4th of September is Currywurst Day.
It celebrates the sausage and sauce streetfood dish that delivers an exotic flavour, at a down-to-earth price.
Currywurst is Germany’s unofficial official street food, especially Berlin.
Everyone has their favourite sausage stand to get it from, as the vendors all use different combinations of sausages, sauces and seasonings.
Have you had currywurst before? If so, do you like yours with the sausage skin on, or off? steamed, or fried? And do you like the curry powder mixed into the tomato sauce, or sprinkled on top after?
What is your favourite side dish to go with your currywurst? Buttered bread, or a bread roll? Or French fries?
What about gourmet versions? The Curry 73 restaurant in Munich puts its currywurst together using organic sausage, a homemade sauce and homemade mayonnaise. The Curry restaurant in Düsseldorf lets you choose from 11 different sauces, and at one point, offered a version with gold leaf. [1]Internationaler Tag der Currywurst. Herzberg, Germany: Cityblick24. History
Reputedly, Currywurst Day marks the exact day in 1949 that currywurst was invented:
“As legend of the links has it, Herta Heuwer was the originator of currywurst. On Sept. 4, 1949, a particularly slow day at her snack stall in West Berlin, she experimented with two ingredients brought by the Allied powers: ketchup from the Americans and curry powder from the British.” [2]Brehaut, Laura.
