When ripe, they have no scent that is discernible before they are cut open. Their flesh is paler and their flavour is more subtle than that of Summer Melons.
With skin that is harder and more solid than that of Summer Melons, Winter Melons travel better to markets, and store better, as the skin holds moisture in. Their skin can be smooth, but it’s just as often furrowed and/or ridged.
This group of Melons is also called the “inodorus” or the “non-netted” group of melons.
Winter Melons are different from Winter Melon Squash.
