The 22nd of August is World Plant Milk Day.
It is a day to encourage people to try plant-based milks and plant-based milk products. Some plant-milk manufacturers even issue today a “7 Day Dairy-Free Challenge” to people.
There are many different types of plant-based milks available now, including avocado, banana and pea.
Producers of plant-based milks claim, unsurprisingly, that their products are as good as or better than actual dairy in terms of nutrition and the environment. It’s not clear, however, that the evolving body of evidence from various ongoing research projects are supporting those marketing claims entirely.
It’s easy to use traditional plant-based milks such as coconut milk and soy milk in recipes that organically call for them; it’s harder to shoehorn them into Western recipes that expect actual dairy milk.
The term has traditionally been “non-dairy milks“, but marketers are trying to replace that term with “plant-based milks” to put a more positive spin on it.
