The First Friday of August is International Beer Day.
It celebrates all those involved in the crafts of beer making and distribution, from the hops growers to the brewers to the bartenders.
It’s nice that it always falls at the start of a weekend.
Some breweries may offer special deals, freebies, coupons or swag on this day.

Activities for today
- Try to match different foods with different beers;
- try a beer you have never tried before;
- try a beer from a country you have never had a beer from before;
- have friends round to yours, or join them at a pub;
- visit a craft brewery today, buy some beers directly from them and leave them a good tip;
- ask the bartender to recommend a beer, then order it;
- stream a movie about beer (there are lots!).
History
The day was started in 2008 in Santa Cruz, California by four people: Jesse Avshalomov, Evan Hamilton, Aaron Araki, and Richard Hernandez. They just kept promoting the idea year after year, to bars and on social media, until it caught on. By 2018, over 200 cities were taking part. [1]Snider, Mike. The Facebook page and Twitter account seems to have stopped being maintained around 2016 in it, so the founders may feel that their job is done and that the day will carry on under its own momentum.
