Cheese and Bread Bake for Breakfast Recipe

If you're up an hour before everyone else on the weekend, it will seem to them like you've fussed since the crack of dawn to make this, but it's dead easy. It's also a great brunch dish. Cooking at: 325 F / 170 C / Gas Mark 3

Course Breakfast, Casseroles, Eggs
Servings 6

Ingredients

  • 6 Eggs
  • 3 cups Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • Ground Pepper
  • 10 slices Bread cubed
  • 2 cups Cheddar Cheese grated
  • 1 Tomato
  • ½ cup Onion chopped finely

Instructions

  • Start heating oven to 325 F / 170 C / Gas Mark 3
  • Arrange bread cubes in a 13 x 9 (3.5 litre) casserole dish (no need to grease the dish.)
  • Slice the tomato thinly, and arrange on top of the bread.
  • Mix all the remaining ingredients; pour over bread & tomato, covering it all. Bake uncovered until a knife comes out clean, about 1 hour.

Notes

If you are feeding fussy kids who won't eat tomato, it can easily be omitted. If you have cooked sausage or bacon, and want to make a one dish meal, you can chop that and arrange on top of bread, too, before pouring egg mixture on. You can get inventive: if you've a taste for fish, like anchovies or kippers, that would be nice in this, too.
