The second Friday of October is World Egg Day.
To celebrate this egg-citing day, egg commissions in different countries do different activities such as promotional cooking videos and free PDF egg cookbooks, press releases, educational outreach about egg labelling and dating, activity books for children, calendars, interviews with egg farmers, distribution of free egg sandwiches, cooking competitions, theatre performances for children, egg sculptures and egg painting, cycle rallies, quizzes, working with food influencers, egg poems by children, give-aways of egg related merchandise such as storage cartons, T-shirts, key holders, etc., Zoom events, contests with prizes, visits to seniors residences, schools and health centres, and awards presentations.
Egg producers want us to know they have dramatically reduced the carbon footprint of egg production, and that eggs can offer sustainable nutrition.
1970s studies purported to show that eggs were bad for people. Further research over the next few decades revealed those studies to be faulty, and the reputation of eggs got saved. In fact, they are now seen as so healthy by dietitians that as of the 2020s, Weight Watchers™ has made eggs a zero point food to encourage people to turn to them more often to build meals around!
Did you know? How you should store eggs — in the fridge, or out of the fridge — depends on where you live! In countries such as the United States, Canada and Japan, commercially-purchased eggs must be stored under refrigeration because of how they have been processed. In Europe, it’s optional: you can store them on the counter, though storing them in the fridge will prolong their shelf life and quality for longer. (See: Proper Egg Storage).
