The 27th of July is Crème Brûlée Day.
It celebrates the vanilla-flavoured custard with a hard caramel layer on top, typically made in individually-sized ramekins.
The caramel layer makes a satisfying crack as you press your spoon into it, making for a dessert that is crunchy and creamy at the same time.
Do you like yours room temperature, or chilled?
Today, you get to have crème brûlée for breakfast, lunch and dinner, if you want.
Typically the custard is vanilla, and that is the default. Have you ever had it flavoured in other ways, though? Chocolate, green tea or Grand Marnier, perhaps? What about a bacon or salt pork custard underneath the caramel layer; would you try that? Or maybe a lobster, Parmesan and corn custard crème brûlée as an appetizer? How about a cookies n’ cream option for the kiddies?
Crème brûlée doesn’t have to be complicated to make; there are some no-bake recipes for it.
Vegan options can be made with tofu instead of the custard.
