The 20th December is Sangria Day.
There is a lot of wine going around this time of year. Celebrating Sangria Day is a good way to turn it into a unique, flamboyant, festive cocktail for a crowd. So celebrate by having a few friends or neighbours over and making a batch of sangria!
Some people say to only use seasonal fruit in sangria, but while that’s fine if you are in the southern hemisphere right now, that’s a little tricky in the northern hemisphere in December as no fruits are in season. But luckily, imported tropical and citrus fruits are never out of season!
There are ways as well to make more calorie-friendly versions of sangria. Though it’s not authentic, sparkling water can give it some fizz in the mouth, while also reducing the calories and giving people a lower-alcohol drink to nurse at parties.
You can also buy sangria already made in bottles or tetrapaks.
Serve it maybe with a platter of nachos to munch on, or a cheese tray.
If you want to do a brunch today, you could try a white sangria, perhaps along with salad, sushi or grilled fish.
Some bars are now offering specials on sangria cocktails on this day.
So go ahead, and celebrate. Those of you in the frosty northern hemisphere can sip on sangria and dream about a warm, March-break holiday perhaps in the months to come.
