The 28th of August is Red Wine Day — even though most red wine lovers don’t need a special day to drink red wine!
That being said, red wine might not really be the wine most people would think of for the hot August weather experience in the northern hemisphere. Typically you’d think of a nice chilled white, sparkling wine or rosé wine. But maybe it’s the right wine for those sultry August nights. Or for those in the Southern Hemisphere where it is still winter.
One commentator wrote:
“Red Wine Day should go down as the most stupidly placed (misplaced?) food/drink holiday on the calendar. We are in the unbearably hot and sticky days of August, when wine drinkers’ thoughts and glasses usually turn to chilled rosé or Chardonnay, not heavy, tannic Cabernet Sauvignon or Bordeaux. Say, “red wine” and immediately the mind leaps to fireplaces on wintry nights, end-of-year holiday meals and romantic Valentine’s Day dinners. I drink red wine all year long, but if I were to pick a day for a national red wine holiday, it would come wrapped in a scarf and sweater.” [1]Mayo, Michael. Red Wine Day in summer? If it’s a really hot day, turn it into sangria or another red wine cocktail! Or maybe making a salad with red wine vinegar would count for today?
Have you ever tried red wine out of a box? Would you? They’ve come a long way!

History
Red Wine Day in August was initiated by Jace Shoemaker-Galloway. She is a website writer, who has created a website, holidays.com, which tracks special days.
On her page for the day, Shoemaker-Galloway writes:
“Aug. 28 is Red Wine Day (RWD) in the U.S.A! This annual ‘spirited’ holiday, created in 2013 by wine-lover and freelance writer, Jace Shoemaker-Galloway.” [2]Shoemaker-Galloway, Jace. National Wine and Cheese Day. 28 August 2015. Accessed June 2021 at https://www.holidailys.com/single-post/2015/08/28/Red-Wine-Day-Cheers
A newspaper reporter asked her, “But why the 28th of August?”:
“I discovered that Red Wine Day, which has now gained steam with sveral publications and websites, is the creation of blogger and self-described “Queen of Holidays” Jace Shoemaker-Galloway, who runs a site named Holidailys.com. Red Wine Day is not an official national food/drink holiday designated by Congress.
“Various calendars and creators often do not play by the rules,” she wrote in an email exchange Monday. Shoemaker-Galloway says she created the day in 2013. Why Aug. 28? She explains: “Since most of us spend our days and nights in the comfort of air conditioning, who says red wine can’t be enjoyed during the dog days of summer, especially with some favorite foods from the grill? And prepare yourself — some suggest chilling their reds! From Pinot Noir to gamay and Grenache, there are plenty of red wines that people can enjoy during the warm months of the year — chilled or not. Cheers!”
I’ll drink to that, I suppose.” [3]Mayo, Michael. Red Wine Day in summer? Go with the flow with these picks for good pours. Fort Lauderdale, Florida: South Florida Sun Sentinel. 27 August 2018.
