Burger Day UK is the last Thursday of August.
At this point in the year, summer is drawing to a close; there are not many opportunities left in the U.K. to fire up the barbie in the backyard.
So cross your fingers and hope it doesn’t rain today! But hey, that’s what brollies are for, right? But even if it does rain, you can always just flip the burger patties on the stove inside, or push the boat out and treat yourself to a burger from your favourite burger joint.
And it doesn’t have to be a “beef” burger today: bison, chicken, fish and vegetarian burgers count too! Consider trying a type of burger you’ve never had before.
Many chains and locations in the past have offered 20% off or other related promotions on this day.
What condiments do you like on your burgers?
If you’ve never used an instant read thermometer to test the doneness of your hamburger patties, today could be a good day to give it a go for the first time. These thermometers are very inexpensive now, and assure food safety. Colour is not a reliable indicator of doneness. They also allow optimum quality: they prevent many a dried, grey, tough hamburger patty that was overcooked out of an abundance of caution.

History
National Burger Day UK was invented by the “Mr Hyde” promotional email newsletter. “Mr Hyde [was a] daily email service for men covering style, culture, film and places to eat meat.” [1]Wilkinson, Sue. Celebrate National Burger Day in UK. Blackpool, England: Blackpool Gazette. 14 August 2020. Accessed July 2021 at https://www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk/read-this/celebrate-national-burger-day-in-uk-2942368
From 2013 until 2015, Burger Day UK was on the fixed date of August 27th. Since 2016, for undisclosed reasons, it has been observed instead on the last Thursday of August.
The email newsletter service was shuttered in 2018 in restructuring done by the Shortlist Media company, which had sponsored it.
“And now friends, some sad news – this is the last-ever Mr Hyde email (we were part of this [Shortlist Media] closure). We’re eternally grateful for you putting up with our foibles, whether inexplicably referring to alcohol as “foam” or “ooze”, or endlessly jabbing at the Tinder bio you probably never even had. Your devotion helped us grow from a little email to a powerhouse capable of delivering events like National Burger Day. Thank you so much for reading and we love you all. Every time you see a burger wrapper swirling in the wind of a repurposed shipping container, smile and know we had something special…” — Accessed July 2021 at https://e.mrhyde.com/25MP-5Y12Q-54GAPRFD8C/cr.aspx
There used to be a website for the day at https://www.nationalburgerday.co.uk/ but that has disappeared. The site used to coordinate ways for people to get 20% off vouchers for Burger Day from various restaurants.
The day is now orphaned, with no one to champion it, so time will tell whether enough momentum exists for it to carry on, on its own.
