Cappuccino Day

8 November

The 8th of November is Cappuccino Day.

The day celebrates cappuccino, the Italian coffee drink that consists of a cup of coffee with a full, rich flavour and a foamy, creamy milk layer on top.

This is a good time of year to celebrate cappuccino, because cappuccino is like the comfort food of coffees, able to warm you up on a chilly November morning. Do you like yours sprinkled with ground cinnamon or cocoa powder, or jacked up with some flavouring syrup? Do you sweeten yours with some sugar? If so, what kind of sugar? White? Raw? Demerara?

And the best part is, even though Italians and purists tut-tut at any cappuccino drinking past noon hour, today, just because it’s Cappuccino Day, you get to have cappuccino all throughout the livelong day. What is your favourite time of day for a cappuccino? What do you like to have with your cappuccino?

Have you ever tried an instant cappuccino from a powder? If so, what did you think of it?

Cappuccino tends to be a premium form of coffee outside Italy (though it’s not that expensive there!) Fancy places often present you your cappuccino with a design in the milk foam. Do you have a regular place you go to that does designs in the milk? Do you have a regular favourite place you get yours?

Because a cappuccino can be pricey, today might be a good time to try to sniff out any deals. Some places will offer discounts on cappuccino with orders placed through an app or a free cappuccino with the purchase of something else, etc. The big coffee chains might offer the best deals, but even so we should all try to support a local independent at least once today.

P.S.: A good take away from today could be to remember that cappuccino has double “p”s and double “cs”!

Activities for today

  • treat yourself to a cappuccino for breakfast, lunch and dinner;
  • meet up with friends or work colleagues at a coffee shop for a cappuccino;
  • if you have an espresso machine at home, have a friend or two over for a mid-morning or afternoon cappuccino (maybe the friends can bring some baked goods to go with);
  • try an iced cappuccino if the day is warm;
  • try a cappuccino made with a non-dairy alternative;
  • take photos of your cappuccinos and share the photos on social media.

History

The earliest print mention that CooksInfo was able to find of a “Cappuccino Day” in November dates from 2010 in New Hampshire:

“Some of the world’s most beloved beverages are associated with monks — Champagne had Dom Perignon, and the Trappists brew their speciality beers. It therefore comes as no surprise that the delightful coffee concoction known as cappuccino also has a monastic connection, which we celebrate today on National Cappuccino Day.” — Santoski, Teresa.
