Just about every culture makes bread in some form.
In some cuisines, such as American, home-baked bread is “the ideal”, even if rarely practised in reality, whereas in others, such as France, the ideal is fresh bread that morning from a bakery (even if, in reality, it is now obtained from a supermarket).
It might be assumed that baking bread at home was the traditional norm, but remember, prior to the 1900s, home ovens were rare and only the very rich had them, so it was in fact more the norm to purchase bread.
